Special issue on Pragmatics in Language and Law
Revista Canaria de Estudios Ingleses (RCEI)
Guest editor: Victoria Guillén-Nieto (University of Alicante)

Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce a Call for Papers for a special issue on Pragmatics in Language and Law
of the Revista Canaria de Estudios Ingleses (RCEI), to be published in November 2006. This
special issue explores the intersection of Pragmatics, Legal Linguistics, and Forensic Linguistics.
It adopts a functional approach, emphasising how Pragmatics can provide valuable insights into
the wording of legal texts, the interpretation of normative legal documents and courtroom
interaction, to understand their meanings and legal implications. The issue also highlights the role
of Pragmatics in identifying pragmatic linguistic cues that could serve as evidence in civil and
criminal proceedings. Moreover, it seeks to determine which adjustments to well-established
theories in Pragmatics are needed to make them effective tools for analysing real-world data from
legal and forensic contexts. Finally, reviews of recent publications in Legal Linguistics or Forensic
Linguistics are also welcome.
I hope you find this special issue engaging for your academic pursuits.
I look forward to receiving your manuscripts.
All the best,

Victoria Guillén-Nieto

Submission guidelines

Manuscript submissions must be written in English, ranging from 6,000 to 8,000 words, and must
adhere to the guidelines available in the latest Chicago Style Manual.
Short abstracts (approximately 6-8 lines) in English and Spanish are required, along with the
Keywords/Palabras Clave (4-8) for the essay in both languages. The Editorial Committee reserves
the right to make stylistic adjustments and modify illustrations.
Footnotes must be numbered sequentially throughout the manuscript. When citing quoted material,
they should be placed after the punctuation mark (for indented quotes) or the quotation marks.

2

Avoid digressive or excessively lengthy footnotes. Subsequent references to a work previously
cited require only the author’s last name; however, if multiple works by the same author have been
cited earlier, the title must also be included (as is clear, op. cit. should not be used).
Any acknowledgements must be presented as an initial, unnumbered note. Each contributor should
submit a note confirming that their manuscript is under consideration solely by Revista Canaria de
Estudios Ingleses (RCEI).
Authors may republish their own material, provided such republication states due
acknowledgement.

Important dates

From 15th January to 2 nd February 2026: Manuscript submission. Authors are requested to
submit their contributions as an anonymised attachment to victoriaguillenieto@gmail.com.
Before submission, authors must ensure that their manuscripts are well written and that they follow
the latest edition of the Chicago Style Manual. Failing to do so could lead to the manuscript being
rejected.
March: Blind peer review. All manuscripts will undergo blind peer review.
April: Notification. Authors will be notified whether their manuscripts are accepted, accepted with
minor or major revisions, or rejected.
31st May: Final submission. Authors must submit their final manuscripts, including the
modifications suggested by the evaluators. Failure to do so may lead to rejection.
